Marble is bought with the eyes. Photographs show the character of a stone, but the vein that crosses your island, the tone under your kitchen lights and the way two pieces meet at a join can only be judged in front of the material. We are straightforward about marble. It is calcite-based, so acidic spills can etch a polished surface, and sealing reduces staining without preventing etching.
